Children are placed in small teaching groups for each area of the curriculum. In this way we are able to teach children according to their stage of development and offer excellent teacher support to maximise learning in a way that ensures continuity and progression. Well qualified and experienced teachers deliver a broad and balanced curriculum.
The children receive an education that develops their knowledge and skills, preparing them for the next stage in their school careers whether in the private or maintained sectors. With the aid and support of well-qualified, enthusiastic and caring staff, the school aims to:-
We undertake to ensure that children receive their entitlement to the National Curriculum and cater for the individual needs of the child as necessary.
All pupils have Physical Education lessons, at least twice weekly. These sessions will be selected from the list below:
| P.E. | Hockey | Swimming | Gymnastics | Rounders | Cross Country |
| Music & Movement | Netball | Games/Skills | Cricket | General Sports | Tennis |
| Dance | Athletics | Football Coaching | Rugby |
The school teaches skills in these areas and then leads on to involve them in competitive sport – both with team games in school and against other independent schools.
The school monitors progress against National Curriculum targets and nationally recognised sports awards e.g. swimming. A sports day is held annually.
The School is divided into The Foundation Unit (2½ -5 years), Infant Section (5-7 years) and Junior section (7-11 years). The Kindergarten forms an integral part of the school and entrants at 2½ years of age (if dry) are expected to continue through the school to the age of 11 years.
Children of this age learn primarily through play. Purposeful play gives opportunities for children to explore and understand the complex world around them. It allows them to develop their gross and fine motor skills, essential when they begin a more formal education. Care is taken to provide wide and varied experiences that give each child chances to: talk and discuss, compare and contrast, solve problems and create, using a variety of different media. Individual play plans and learning journeys are produced following initial assessments once the child begins the kindergarten.
You will be pleased to know that Saville House School is a registered provider and parent/carers may send their child to the school for nursery education and receive funding usually offering up to six terms of funding. This commences the term following the child’s third birthday and pays approximately 1/3 of the school fees during the first six terms.
Towards the end of this stage children will be introduced, according to their development, to the more formal academic work of mathematics, reading and writing.
From the Year 1 onwards work becomes progressively more formal. Emphasis is placed on each child becoming proficient in numeracy and literacy skills.
The curriculum follows the guidelines of The National Curriculum and subjects are taught separately, notably the core subjects of Maths, English and Science (learning spellings, tables).
The cursive script is introduced at the beginning of the department, responsibility and pride in the presentation of their work is encouraged. Skill in Design and Technology, ICT and computers is supported.
Opportunities for PE, PHSE, Drama, Humanities, Design and Technology, Information Communication Technology and Languages are provided. We have recently refurbished our art, DT and science rooms.
The curriculum, though still taking the same format as the infant department, increases in the content matter.
Children are encouraged to become increasingly more independent using books to find out information for themselves.
The school operates a co-operative partnership between home and school. We encourage children to understand that their actions can affect the well being of others.
The school has a computer suite enabling each child to experience and become proficient in computer studies. There is also a computer in each classroom to enable 1 to 1 computer work.
We aim to encourage self-confidence, self-esteem and a sense of achievement and pride in their work and school.
