Key Stage 2
Years Three to Six
At Key Stage 2 a broad and balanced curriculum builds on the foundations laid in Key Stage 1. We continue to offer the children a safe, nurturing
environment whilst encouraging independence. We follow a traditional subject based curriculum (following the National Curriculum) whilst encompassing a variety of modern teaching techniques, including the use ICT, group tasks and research
As in Key Stage 1 an importance is still placed on basic skills such as handwriting, weekly spelling, tables and mental math’s tests. Children still read to the class teacher either on an individual basis or as part of guided reading.
In Key Stage 2 children can continue to learn either French or German. In Key Stage 2 the class teacher, takes a class a week where children are taught to converse with each other and learn correct pronunciation and spelling. Through lively activities children learn basic phrases for conversation and the correct pronunciation.
The school teaches skills in a range of different sports, such as hockey, football, and this then leads on to involve the children in competitive sport – both with team games in school and against other independent schools. Swimming is undertaken weekly at the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre with the children working towards distance badges and Key Stage 2 School's Award.
As part of Key Stage 2 enrichment an exciting schedule of activities and trips are planned, linking into the taught curriculum and places of pupil interest. Previous trips have included Science Live! and London.
In Year 6, there is also the option for children to take part in The DARE Primary Programme. The course teaches children to be responsible, to think about the consequences of their actions and to make informed decisions. It also gives age appropriate, accurate and up to date facts and information which enables children to learn about the health effects which drugs have on the human body. As the course progresses, learning develops and children’s awareness around communication, resisting pressure and managing stressful situations improve.
